Ian was born in Saltburn and lived in Redcar for the majority of his youth. The proximity of the coast and the sea has always informed his creative work. It seems to make no difference where he finds himself in Eton, Cairo or Valencia it always seems to boil down to aspects of the North Yorkshire coast indirectly or topographically.
His formative influences of the sea and the coastal people and landscape has persisted for over a half a century and he sees no reason to look elsewhere.
